Do you want to try traditional German food that has nothing to do with sausages or pork knuckle? Then, Mama Kalo is the answer to your prayers. This small french-german restaurant is located in Schillerkiez, one of our favorite parts of Neukölln. And the combination of watching the sunset in Tempelhof and then going for dinner is one of our secret weapons when we have visitors to make them fall in love with this city. The place is cozy and charming. Its highlights are the flammkuchen and the spätzle, both specialties from the south of Germany and the region of Alsace in France. In case you are not familiar with this dishes, flammkuchen is similar to pizza with a really thin and crispy crust, and creme fraiche or sour cream instead of tomato sauce. The spätzle, on the other hand, is some kind of pasta, usually cooked in a delicious cheese sauce (in that case it is called käsespätzle)
Flammkuchen, the German alternative to pizza
Part of the menu is seasonal and always changing, we suggest you always try to order whatever is highlighted on the blackboard menu. We always do so, and in our last visit, we were delighted by a beetroot spätzle that was out of this world. Although we strongly encourage you to order the already mentioned dishes, in case you want to go for something more standard, they also offer quite nice salads, quiches, and soups.
Not only the place is lovely but, its outdoor tables are the perfect choice for sunny days. This restaurant is a safe choice, one of those places with which you can do no wrong. It will please everyone, and it’s suitable for almost every situation, from a family lunch to a romantic dinner. Even if you are more in the mood of a picnic in the park since you can also have their food to go.
